Brocken & Harz National Park

The highest in the north

Life in the primeval forest around the Brocken fades and rises again. Moss mats and tangles of dead wood, on the trunks like little plant candles, the new primeval forest trees - young growth on dead wood, carcass regeneration - can also be seen from the path in some places.

The Brocken primeval forest - a living world with its own dramaturgy, just a few kilometres above Schierke.

Full steam ahead to the Brocken

Harz narrow-gauge railway

To have been to the Brocken once in a lifetime is a dream for many people. "With the puffing Brocken railway, that would be it" - we hear this sentence from guests again and again.

The steam locomotives run daily through the Harz Mountains according to a timetable. They call at over 40 railway stations and stops in the Harz Mountains and on the Brocken.

Wernigerode

"It's beautiful here!"

Anyone strolling through the streets of Wernigerode for the first time will quickly realise: "It's beautiful here!" Lovingly restored half-timbered buildings, exciting details on the Wernigerode town hall on the market square, an (almost) real fairytale castle, forest, nature and nice people.

A "colourful town in the Harz Mountains", as Herman Löns said many decades ago.
